Want some Chai?
Project: Documenting
Location: Manali, India
In India, 'Chai' i.e. Tea is a more than just a cup of tea to start the day - the thick sweet drink is an integral part of the rhythm of life. Everything, from neighbourly gossip to intense political discussions happens over a cup of tea. Tea is the most common taste of India. This hot beverage is a regular entertainer, a source of living, a refreshing drink, an excuse for discussions, a part of gossip culture and a household tradition in India. Indians have an affair with tea in the evenings too. I met Ram Lal Bhaiya while I was out of breath and wanted a quick chai break during my trek. His beautiful mountain facing house cum tea stall drove me towards it. I asked him "ye ghar toh chodd kar kahin jaane ka dil nhi karta hoga?" (I guess you don't feel like leaving this place and shift in to a city?), Ram Lal says "It's been 9 years that i have been selling tea at this same spot. I had as a child to make it big, but destiny has some other plans. My parents stay nearby and I cannot live without them. It's ironic that nobody is ever satisfied with the life we are living. May be that is what keeps us moving, keeps the hustle on.
